Hi everyone 🌻
This might be a bit of a newbie question but it’s been on my mind for weeks now.
I’ve been on Wegovy since late January and things are going well (down just over a stone so far 💪). I’ve still got a fair way to go, but I’m starting to wonder what actually happens when you hit your goal weight or a “healthy” BMI?
Do they expect you to come off it straight away? Is there like… a tapering period? Or do some people carry on for a while to maintain?
I get that long-term use isn’t always advised, but it also feels a bit scary to just stop and hope everything doesn’t pile back on 😬
Has anyone here reached that point yet? Or heard from their doctor what the plan would be?
Would love to hear your thoughts 🫶
Kate
Hi Kate 👋
Brilliant progress – you should be really proud of yourself 💛
I asked my nurse the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago. She said once I hit my “target” BMI (which is 25 in my case), they’ll assess whether I should taper down. But it’s not a strict rule – she said some people continue on a lower dose for maintenance, depending on history and risk of regain.
Definitely worth having the convo sooner rather than later. I'm aiming for 24.5 BMI personally, so it doesn’t feel like I’m walking a tightrope 😅
That’s something I’ve been wondering about too! I’ve only just started (week 3 on Mounjaro), but the idea of getting to your goal then just stopping feels a bit like being thrown into the deep end without armbands 😂
Hope some folks who’ve actually got to the finish line can chime in!
Hey all – great thread.
I finished my first “course” of Wegovy last December. My GP and I agreed to pause it once I’d stabilised around BMI 26 (my goal was 25-ish but we stopped a bit early due to supply issues 😩).
I tapered down for 4 weeks, then stopped fully. I’ve kept the weight off since, but it’s not been easy. I’ve had to really up my food planning game.
Happy to chat if anyone wants to know how the tapering worked in more detail!
@MikeMoves Would love to know how you handled the food side once you stopped. That’s my fear too – being hungry again and just slipping back.
Still early days for me (about 7 weeks in) but I’ve had this chat bookmarked in my brain for a while!
@SunflowerKate sure! I prepped for the “reboot” about 4 weeks before tapering. Upped protein big time and cut snacking to 2 fixed times/day (instead of grazing all day).
The biggest shift was mental, tbh. I had to stop treating the jab like a safety net and remind myself daily that it’s me doing the work, not the med.
Not perfect, but I’m holding steady!
I’m in two minds about this.
On one hand I totally get why they don’t want people on it forever, but on the other hand… if it’s working and safe for me, why stop?
My GP hinted there might be stricter NHS cutoffs down the line (like BMI under 27 = no more script), but who knows. It’s so early days for this stuff. I just hope we get clearer guidance soon.
@VeeBee_88 Yep, I’ve heard similar. I’m being seen privately and they said some people stay on a “maintenance” dose long-term if the risks are low and it keeps them in a healthy range.
Feels like a bit of a postcode lottery, if I’m honest 🤷♂️
Thanks so much everyone ❤️
This has been so helpful – honestly didn’t expect such a big response today!
I’ll defo talk to my GP at the next check-in and see what their view is. Just really didn’t want to feel blindsided when the time comes.
I’m going to bring this up too now. Just booked in for a bloods review in two weeks so perfect timing!
Feels good knowing I’m not the only one already stressing about the end before I’ve hit the middle 😅
The mental side of this is wild – I’ve lost 3kg and I’m already imagining a horror movie where it all comes back the minute I stop jabbing 😂
Let’s keep this thread alive – I’d love to hear more from folks who’ve managed the transition off it 🙌
@JayTheWay honestly, yes! Like part of me is more scared of coming off it than I was of starting in the first place.
But reading all your comments makes it less scary – especially @MikeMoves, thanks for the tapering tips 💚
👋 Just popping in to say we love how helpful and open this chat is.
We’ll be pulling together an article based on your stories here – with some expert insights on coming off treatment and staying on track. Keep sharing what’s helped you!
7 weeks in here on Mounjaro. I’m a bit like some of you – thinking ahead even though I’m not near goal yet.
From what I’ve read and heard, it’s not a case of hit your goal, stop the MJ and get on with things. Most decent doctors seem to agree you either taper down slowly or stay on a low dose for a bit to help maintain, depending how your body and habits are doing.
Biggest thing I keep hearing is – don’t rely just on the jab. Build the habits while you're still on it. Protein at every meal, cut the mindless snacking, get some movement in. Get rid of the processed foods - reset your lifestyle.
If you’ve done the groundwork, coming off it won’t feel like the rug’s being pulled out from under you. If you haven’t, yeah – it’ll be a harder ride. My POV, but what is the point of going on the MJ if you go back to old habits after....you'll just put the pounds back on. This is my resetand I'm going to change habits long-term.
That's the way I’m approaching it anyway. Keep going!
