It’s Christmas season: do I tell my friends and family I’m on weight loss jabs?

Robert Price | Last update: 20th November 2025

Christmas is all about getting together, eating, drinking and catching up. This means sooner or later someone will comment on how you look, how little you’re eating or how “amazing” your weight loss has been. If you’re taking a GLP-1 jabs like Wegovy or Mounjaro you might already be dreading the inevitable question: “So what’s your secret?” Do you tell them? Or keep it private? Here’s some tips on how to navigate that tricky Christmas conversation with confidence and kindness, whatever you decide

It’s Christmas season: do I tell my friends and family I’m on weight loss jabs?

You don’t owe anyone an explanation

Whether you’re on weight loss jabs, had surgery or simply changed your habits it’s your choice. Don’t stress, it’s your body and your business. You don’t owe anyone a full explanation even during the Christmas festivities!

Some people share because it helps them feel supported and proud. Others prefer privacy because they don’t want unsolicited opinions. Both choices are completely valid.

If you do want to tell people…

Choose your moment and your words.

  • Keep it short and factual. “I’m on the new GLP-1 treatment prescribed by my doctor.”
  • Normalise it. “It’s just like any other medical treatment, it’s helping me get healthier.”
  • Set boundaries early. If someone gets too curious, try: “It’s working for me”

Most people will move on quickly. And if they don’t, that says more about them than you.

If you’d rather keep it private

You absolutely can and you don’t have to lie. We’ve seen come celebrities come unstuck with essentially lying and it’s not a good look.

Here are a few neutral responses that deflect without inviting follow-up questions:

  • “I’ve been making a few changes and it’s really helping.”
  • “I’m eating smaller portions and feeling better for it.”
  • “I’m just trying to look after myself a bit more this year.”

Short, polite, and conversation-closing. Done.

Handling awkward comments

Let’s be honest families and old friends can be terrible at subtlety. You might hear:

“You don’t need those jabs!” “Aren’t those dangerous?” “That’s cheating.”

Deep breath. Count to 10.

Remember, most people are reacting to half-truths they’ve seen online. You don’t have to educate them but if you want to, you could say:

“It’s a proper medical treatment, not a quick fix. It’s helping me make long-term changes.”

or, more assertively (like I have occasionally):

“If it’s ok for lots of celebrities it’s good enough for me! And I needed a prescription.”

Then steer the chat back to safer ground; Christmas films, their dog, literally anything else.

“I am not embarrassed that I have taken Wegovy to kick start my weight loss, but I decided I didn’t want anyone to know or to deal with people judging me for my decision. I have lost weight in the past and done it without medication.  But since having a baby and being in my late 30’s I  have really struggled with my weight so opted to get a little help with Wegovy and it has been incredible for me.  When talking to colleagues, friends & family I  tell them that I have fully committed to getting back on track. I talk about all the tools I’ve used to support my weight loss journey, I just don’t tell them about the skinny jab!” Jane

Your Christmas message

You started this treatment for you, not for other people’s approval. Whether you share or stay silent, the important thing is that you feel comfortable, safe, and proud of the progress you’ve made.

Christmas doesn’t have to be a performance.

So tell them if you want to. Don’t tell them if you don’t want to. Most important that you stay on your plan.

And either way, raise a glass or a mocktail to yourself for doing something that takes courage and commitment. You definitely have got this!!
