Heart help from GLP-1 weight loss jabs? New major benefits revealed
Robert Price | Last update: 31st August 2025
We’ve been updating everyone on the growing list of info that shows GLP-1’s improve general health, as well as helping lose weight.
But could your weight-loss jab also be protecting your heart? More evidence just been released

What you need to know
Weight loss treatments Wegovy and Mounjaro could dramatically lower your risk of heart failure and early death. This confirms what some SlimrChat users have already felt: GLP-1 jabs may be doing more than just helping us with weight.
The research has been completed by Mass General Brigham, a Boston based hospital and healthcare group, and was presented this weekend at the European Society of Cardiology conference and was featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
What the data shows
They tracked over 90,000 patients with heart failure, obesity, and type 2 diabetes, specifically those with a common form of heart failure.
They found that people who were taking Wegovy or Ozempic had a 42% lower risk of hospitalisation or dying early than those who weren’t using those treatments. For Mounjaro the effect was 58% lower risk of hospitalisation for heart failure or death.
The British Heart Foundation has made it clear that the evidence is growing about the positive effects of weight loss drugs to help people with heart disease and weight issues. They have pushed for the NHS to ensure they help those people too.
What does it mean for you?
If you’re using Wegovy or Mounjaro and you’ve also been told you have heart issues, this research is incredibly encouraging. But it also raises important questions:
- How could these treatments be used more widely for heart patients?
- Are we still underusing treatments that could help millions?
More than just weight loss
The benefits may not all come from shedding pounds or kilos. Doctors say these jabs may also help by improving how your heart, kidneys and metabolism function, even before major weight loss kicks in.
Dr Akshay Desai, one of the lead heart experts on the study, says GLP-1 drugs could become a “really attractive” treatment option for patients with heart failure and obesity. He underlined the need for more clinical trials before changing official guidelines.
