Hangovers on Mounjaro or Wegovy: why are they worse?

Robert Price | Last update: 6th December 2025

If you’ve noticed that one glass of wine suddenly feels like three, you’re not alone.

People taking weight loss treatments like Wegovy or Mounjaro often find alcohol hits harder and the hangovers that follow can feel brutal. I can certainly say they did for me, and my friends!

So what’s going on, and can you do anything to soften the blow? And should you?

Hangovers on Mounjaro or Wegovy: why are they worse?

Why booze feels stronger

GLP-1 jabs slow down how quickly your stomach empties. That’s great for appetite control but it also means alcohol stays in your system longer.

It’s not surprise that the results of this are:

  • You feel tipsy faster
  • The effects last longer
  • Hangovers can be stronger, even after small amounts

In other words, your “usual” drinking pace might now be too much for your body to handle. This really seems to be the case with many people in the SlimrChat universe.

My personal experience was that even if I wanted to drink what I had before it really wasn’t possible. Interestingly, it’s still the case now I’m in weight maintenance.

What a GLP-1 hangover feels like

People describe it as more intense, longer lasting and annoyingly less predictable. So, in short, worse! Hangovers on Mounjaro and Wegovy

Common symptoms include:

  • Strong nausea or vomiting
  • Headache, fatigue, and light sensitivity
  • Stomach discomfort or reflux
  • Low mood and dehydration

It’s not just the alcohol, it’s your slowed digestion, possible dehydration, and sometimes lower calorie intake, all combining to make recovery tougher.

The science bit

Normally, food and drink pass through your stomach steadily.

GLP-1 drugs deliberately slow this down so you stay fuller for longer.

When you drink alcohol, it mixes with stomach contents and enters your bloodstream more gradually. But because digestion is slower, your body ends up processing the alcohol over a longer window of time.

That’s why even one or two drinks can feel like much more than before.

How to prevent or ease a GLP-1 hangover

Here’s what actually helps and what doesn’t.

  • Eat first. Never drink on an empty stomach. Choose a balanced meal with protein and carbs.
  • Pace yourself. Sip slowly, and stop before you normally would.Hangovers on Mounjaro and Wegovy
  • Stay hydrated. Alternate every drink with water or soda water.
  • Stick to clear spirits. Vodka, gin, tequila or dry wine cause fewer after-effects than creamy or sugary cocktails.
  • Avoid heavy or fatty foods. Your stomach is already slower to empty so don’t overload it.
  • Sleep and reset. A short walk and plenty of fluids the next day help your body recover faster.
  • Skip “hair of the dog” remedies. Your body doesn’t need more alcohol. It needs time, hydration, and rest!!

Or, you could just choose non-alcoholic drinks….:)))

Golden Rule: know your new (lower) limit

Most people find their alcohol tolerance drops significantly on the jabs.

That doesn’t mean you can’t ever drink again, just that “moderation” now looks very different.

Start with half your usual amount, go slowly and listen to your body.

And if alcohol just doesn’t feel good anymore? That’s okay too. Many SlimrChat community members find they simply lose interest in it  and that’s not a bad thing.

So…

Weight loss drug hangovers are real (and can be worse!) but they’re also avoidable.

Think smaller, lighter, and slower.

Respect what your body’s telling you, hydrate like it’s your job and enjoy your night for the company, not the cocktails. Because no night out is worth a two-day recovery.

But if you end up feeling a little less brighter the following day, remember to be kind to yourself because a new day is a chance to start over.
