How Mounjaro or Wegovy Should Be Delivered and Stored

If you’re using GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Mounjaro (tirzepatide) or Wegovy (semaglutide), it’s essential to know how they should be delivered and stored to stay safe and effective.

These are temperature-sensitive medications. Whether you’re ordering online, receiving a delivery, or travelling, poor storage could reduce their effectiveness – or render them completely useless.

How Mounjaro or Wegovy Should Be Delivered and Stored

1: Delivery Standards for Mounjaro and Wegovy

Since Mounjaro and Wegovy are temperature-sensitive ‘fridge line’ products, pharmacies are responsible for ensuring they are delivered safely under strict cold-chain conditions.

Delivery Requirements

  1. Cold Chain Packaging: Your medicines should be delivered using cold chain packaging to ensure a consistent refrigerated temperature during delivery.
  2. Insulation and Ice: Pharmacies should deliver Mounjaro using proper cold-chain procedures. This packaging typically includes insulated materials, such as wool insulation, to regulate the internal temperature. It must also contain ice packs.
    • Pharmacies usually use one ice pack during cooler weather (generally below 12°C) and two ice packs during warmer periods (when daytime highs exceed 15–18°C) to maintain stability.
  3. Temperature Maintenance: The goal is to keep the medication between 2°C and 8°C throughout the entire journey. 
  4. Discreet Packaging: Medications should be posted in discrete packaging.

Checking Your Delivery and Your Rights

When your package arrives, you should take immediate steps to check its condition and safety:

  • Check the Temperature: Immediately open the package and check the temperature of the ice pack – it should still feel cold or cool.
  • Look for Damage: Inspect the pen itself for any damage.
  • Contact the Pharmacy if Warm: If the pen arrives warmer than fridge temperature, you can still use it, but the maximum time limits begin immediately from the date of dispatch (see Short-Term Storage below). If you are unsure whether your pen was exposed to excessive heat, contact the pharmacy for advice.
  • Know Your Rights: As Mounjaro is considered an essential prescription medicine, if your delivery arrives late, feels warm, or lacks proper cold-chain packaging, you can request the pharmacy replace the pen or issue a refund if you believe heat may have damaged it.

2: How to Store Wegovy and Mounjaro

Proper storage is crucial to maintaining the effectiveness of both Wegovy and Mounjaro, as they must not be exposed to freezing or excessive heat.

A. Unopened/Long-Term Storage (Refrigerated)

Before the pens are used for the first time, they require cold storage:

Duration Unopened pens remain safe to use when stored in the fridge until the expiry date printed on the label.

B. In-Use or Short-Term Storage (Room Temperature)

Once the cold chain is broken (either by removing it from the fridge before first use or after the first injection), the clock starts ticking on its shelf life, regardless of whether it is returned to the fridge or kept at room temperature.

You have the option to continue storing the used pen in the fridge or in a protected dark environment, provided the temperature remains below 30°C.

C. Visual Inspection and Discarding Pens

Before every injection, you must visually inspect the pen contents to ensure the medication is safe to use.

  • Appearance Check: The solution inside the pen should be clear and colourless (for Mounjaro, it may be clear, colourless to slightly yellow). If the medication looks cloudy, discolored, or has particles in it, do not use it.
  • Freezing: If the pen has been frozen, it must be discarded as freezing can cause the ingredients to separate, making it ineffective or dangerous.
  • Time Limits: Dispose of the pen if the expiration date has passed or if the short-term storage limit (6 weeks for Wegovy, 30 days for Mounjaro) has been exceeded since it was first taken out of the fridge or first used.
  • Disposal: Used pens and needles must be disposed of safely in a sharps bin. Expired medication should be taken to the nearest GP surgery or pharmacy for proper disposal.
