Are there any weight loss drug shortages in the UK?

Are there any weight loss drug shortages in the UK?

We’ve all seen news stories about UK shortages of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, like Wegovy (Ozempic), Mounjaro and Saxenda. They were a real problem for many of us in 2024. They remain a challenge in 2025 but there’s been huge improvement.

What’s causing the shortages?

The demand for weight loss drugs has surged hugely across the word globally. And the UK is no different. The demand has been increased by the access we all have to online doctors, pharmacies and healthcare providers who are able to prescribe the drugs if you meet the correct criteria. This has led to supply shortages.

Other contributing factors include:

  • Manufacturing constraints: demand has outpaced production capabilities.
  • Regulatory concerns: counterfeit products entering the market have added strain to distribution networks.
  • Global impact: supply issues aren’t limited to the UK; it’s a global issue.

Current status and improvements

The good news is that supply has improved in the UK. According to recent updates SlimrChat have received:

  • Wegovy: there are no reported issues with supply.
  • Mounjaro: there are some reports of short supply of 12.5mg and 15mg dosages.
  • Saxenda: there are short supply issues nationwide.

What to do if your prescription is affected

Navigating a shortage is frustrating, but there are some steps you can take:

Communicate with your doctor or healthcare provider

Discuss options such as adjusting your dosage, temporarily switching to a different weight loss drug, or prioritising lifestyle changes.

Be prepared

Be proactive about repeat prescriptions and stay informed about stock availability in your area. If your pharmacy has no stock check stock levels at different pharmacies and ask to join waiting lists.
