When GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Mounjaro might not be right for you

Tanya Reynard | Last update: 14th July 2025

På GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Mounjaro and Wegovy are transforming lives. But they’re not suitable for everyone. Here’s when they might not be the right fit — and what to consider before starting.

When GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Mounjaro might not be right for you

TL;DR

  • GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are powerful tools, but they’re not right for everyone.
  • Certain medical conditions, life stages like pregnancy, and other factors could mean these medications aren’t safe or suitable for you.
  • Always speak to your doctor or healthcare provider before starting.

When weight loss drugs might not be safe

Weight loss drugs like Mounjaro and Wegovy work by mimicking natural hormones to regulate appetite and blood sugar. But they also come with some specific warnings.

According to manufacturers:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: These medications should not be used if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Weight loss is not recommended during pregnancy.
  • History of pancreatitis: If you’ve ever had pancreatitis, it’s important to tell your healthcare provider before starting GLP-1 medications. (See our article on pancreatitis and GLP-1s)
  • Medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2: If you or a close family member has a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2), GLP-1s may not be advised.
  • Severe digestive issues: Conditions like gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying) could worsen on GLP-1s.

For more details, see Eli Lilly’s official Mounjaro guidance and Novo Nordisk’s information on Wegovy.

Other reasons it might not be the right time

Even if you’re medically eligible, there may be other reasons to pause or reconsider:

1. You’re not ready to make lifestyle changes

Weight loss drugs can help suppress appetite and control cravings, but they’re not magic. If you’re not able or willing to build new habits around food, movement and self-care, your results may stall.

2. You have other health priorities

GLP-1s can cause side effects. If you’re managing a serious illness, recovering from surgery, or in a life phase where side effects would be hard to manage, your doctor may recommend holding off.

3. You’re under 18

These drugs are not typically recommended for anyone under 18 (except in rare, approved medical circumstances).

4. You’re pregnant or planning to be

You should not use GLP-1 weight loss drugs during pregnancy. If you’re trying for a baby, tell your healthcare provider. These drugs should be stopped at least 2 months before conception.

What about the cost?

If you’re not eligible for NHS prescriptions, weight loss drugs can cost hundreds of pounds per month. And most people will need to take them for a year or more.

“Cost isn’t just about the jab — it’s the long game.”

Always talk to your doctor

Even if weight loss drugs feel like the answer you’ve been waiting for, it’s important to:

  • Share your full medical history
  • Discuss current medications and conditions
  • Ask about long-term use, side effects, and safety

“GLP-1s have helped so many people. But they’re not the right choice for everyone — and that’s OK.”

Making an informed choice is part of taking back control of your health.
