New rules for online pharmacies – what you need to know

In February new UK Mounjaro prescription rules were introduced for prescribing weight loss treatments through online pharmacies in the UK. Here’s what you need to know.
The background
The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has reviewed how online pharmacies are prescribing weight loss treatments. They were particularly focussed on unsafe prescribing (not enough checks) and over prescribing (setting high sales targets).
What’s the result?
GPhC has now classified prescribed weight loss treatments as high risk. These changes aim to ensure that patients meet the necessary eligibility criteria and to prevent access for those with eating disorders.
The pharmacies now As a result the rules for pharmacies them have been strengthened but safety of the weight loss drugs hasn’t changed.
Key changes you need to be aware of:
- Independent verification of your weight, height, and BMI: Pharmacies must now verify this information using your medical records or direct measurements. They will stop relying solely on self-reported questionnaires and photos.
- Stronger verification process: Pharmacies are required to confirm the information you provide through two-way communication methods. This includes video calls, checking medical records or contacting your healthcare provider.
- Information-sharing with your GP: Online pharmacies are now instructed to tell your GP or healthcare provider whenever you are prescribed a weight loss treatment.
What this means for you
Because of the changes, if you are using or considering weight loss drugs, it may mean a longer process when obtaining your prescription. This is because pharmacies will conduct additional verification steps. These measures ensure your safety and appropriate use of the medications.
We believe these new guidelines are a positive step. We always recommend being open with your healthcare provider to ensure you are making the best choices, and meeting the eligibility requirements.
