Are weight loss drugs right for you?

Robert Price | Last update: 2nd October 2025

We all know how losing weight is really really hard for most of us. Many of us have tried countless diets, exercise plans and lifestyle changes with mixed results, as best.

Over the last 2 years prescription only GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro have made all the headlines as the go-to way to get on track with our weight loss journeys. They’re certainly powerful new options but, putting all the buzz to one side, you might be wondering are they right for me?

The real answer to the question depends on your personal health, your goals and your willingness to balance the benefits with the known risks.

Remember you should always speak to your doctor or healthcare provider before starting any prescription medications.

Here’s our quick and simple guide

Are weight loss drugs right for you?

Benefits of weight loss drugs

Weight loss treatments aren’t a magic fix, but they can be highly effective tools when used alongside healthier eating and movement. Some of the main benefits include:

  • Clinically proven results: people can lose 15% or more of their body weight over time with GLP-1 medications. Read our article on how they work and see whether Mounjaro or Wegovy are right for you.
  • Reduced appetite and cravings: weight loss drugs target hunger hormones, which can make it easier to resist overeating, reduce food noise and make you feel fuller for longer. Stories from our community members Vivienne, Gemma and Emily show the effects of these revolutionary treatments.
  • Mounjaro 11 stone weight loss story

Improved health outcomes: studies show weight loss drugs can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, improve blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels. There’s also research showing effects on cancer.

  • Better quality of life: beyond the numbers many people report higher energy, improved sleep and more confidence. Some of our community report higher libido too!

I’m firmly in middle age and realised I needed a long-term plan to keep the weight off. I’d seen the effects of MJ for friends and it was clear what I should do. It’s totally worked and I’ve kept the weight off since stopping the jabs by refusing to go back to old ways. Robert, SlimrChat Founder.

Risks and side effects

It won’t be a surprise to you that these prescription weight loss medications do have some downsides. Like all prescription drugs they have been tested and trialled extensively before and after they were approved by the regulatory bodies in the UK, and overseas. Here’s the key things you should think about, discuss with your doctor or healthcare provider and ask people who’ve experienced the treatments about:

  • Common side effects: the most reported side effects (in testing and on our SlimrChat forums) are nausea, constipation, diarrhoea or fatigue. These are especially highlighted when people are at the start of their treatment. Have a look at our info on common side effects and tips to overcome side effects
  • Serious risks: you should be aware that there are some more serious, but not common, risks including pancreatitis. Make sure you’re aware of these risks and your own medical history.
  • Long-term unknowns: these are relatively new drugs so the long-term impact isn’t fully understood yet. However, widespread positive research continues to be released.
  • Cost and access: private prescriptions can be expensive so make sure you understand the full costs (the SlimrChat price tracker goes live soon) and NHS availability is currently very limited.

I can’t even contemplate greasy foods and am pretty sure that fast food habit has fast gone! Vivienne Joy, Your Jab Life contributor

Alternatives

Weight loss drugs are just one part of the wider picture. Depending on your situation, other approaches may be safer or more sustainable:

  • Lifestyle changes: building consistent habits around food, movement/ exercise, sleep and reducing stress can make a major difference.
  • Behavioural support: therapy, counselling or support groups can help with emotional eating or long-standing habits.
  • Medical options: for some of us bariatric surgery or weight loss medications may be recommended.
  • Combination approach: many people find success blending small lifestyle shifts with or without medical support. The evidence is clear that the most enduring way to use weight loss drugs is to have them as part of an overall weight loss and lifestyle plan.
